TORONTO, ON – Listen up, Torontonian musical lovers! Recipient of the 2007 Dora Audience Choice Award for Toronto’s favourite show, Evil Dead – The Musical is set for a return to Toronto starting February 12, 2016. The 16-day run which is set to culminate on February 28th, 2016 will take place at Randolph Theatre located at 736 Bathurst St. (formerly known as The Bathurst Street Theatre).
The hilarious, record-breaking Canadian cult classic musical entails the outrageous story of five college friends spending the weekend in an abandoned cabin in the woods after accidently unleashing an evil force that turns them all into demons. Directed, co-created and co-composed by Christopher Bond, the production’s book and lyrics are by Geoge Reinblatt whilst featuring music by Frank Cipolla, Melissa Morris, Reinblatt and Bond.
The musical has enjoyed tremendous success since its debut in 2003 selling out to capacity and beyond (Toronto’s Tranzac Club). Such was the craze for the production that diehard fans of the Evil Dead film series made pilgrimages from all over North America to witness the birth of the new cult hit. Upon returning to Toronto in 2007, Evil Dead – The Musical staged a staggering record-breaking run of more than 300 performances at the now defunct Diesel Playhouse.
Those attending a show in its latest North American tour can expect dismembered limbs, demons telling bad jokes, catchy tunes (Look Who’s Evil Now, All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Canadian Demons) and a saucy combination of wit and sexual innuendo that is guarantee to keep the audiences laughing. A note of caution for those not familiar with earlier productions must be highlighted: the production features a designated “Splatter Zone” where audience members get covered in fake blood as part of the ‘real-life’ effect that take place during certain scenes.
So to the faint hearted who are not big fans of “fake” blood, stay away from front row seats. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
While the New York Times called it “the next Rocky Horror Show” and Toronto Star terms it “bloody hilarious” giving it a four stars out of four, president of Starvox Entertainment (producers of the show) remarked, “Evil Dead – The Musical is the most fun you can have at the theatre. It’s a show that everyone loves – even if you don’t love musicals.”
