Rio 2016 – or the 31st Summer Olympics – is now less than 365 days away from us. In the same city that hosted the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the world’s greatest athletes will converge for the pride of their nations in Brazil. As the seconds tick down, OMEGA has proudly introduced the Seamaster Bullhead Rio 2016 Limited Edition – a celebration of heritage, precision and sporting excellence.
As part of OMEGA’s Olympic Collection, the Bullhead “Rio 2016” is sure to capture the pulses of many. At first glance, it is instantly recognizable for its unique design and style. The blue leather strap is linked directly to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games logo with subtle stitching featuring along each side. In recognition of the renowned Olympic rings, the stitching appears in yellow, green, red and black. The colour theme is evident on the 60-minutes rotating inner-bezel as well – acting as a meaningful reminder of the unity and harmony synonymous with the Olympic rings.
The case too has an important link to history and sport. This particular style was first released in 1969 and was utilized by rally drivers to time their laps. This is appropriate as the spirit of speed has now evolved to exemplify OMEGA’s continuing association as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games.
Like its predecessors, the Bullhead Rio 2016 also features a central chronograph seconds and a 30-minute recorder at 12H. Fascinatingly, the name “Bullhead” was originally a nickname – coined by watch collectors who admired the shape of the timepiece – before concluding that it looked like the head of a bull. It goes without saying that the qualities of strength and determination akin to that of a bull will be on full display next summer in Rio.
The Seamaster Bullhead Rio 2016 Limited released exactly one year before the Olympic Games get underway – August 5th, 2015. Only 316 of these symbolic watches have been made available. The specific number is a homage to this being the 3rd time Golf has been part of the Games and the year 2016. With OMEGA’s exclusive Co-Axial calibre 3113 and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games logo on the caseback, the watch has become an instant collector’s item.
Thanks to all those involved at OMEGA, the winning standard in watchmaking has already been set long before the first race has even been run.
The watch is priced at $10,200 and can be found here.
