Music You Ought To Know – The Brewing Of An Inevitable Album Battle

The latest feature in our Music You Ought To Know oversees two of the most widely-followed pop artists of modern day. With almost 160 million Twitter followers spread between the quintet, Justin Bieber and One Direction have released catchy pop singles in the same week – three weeks before their latest albums drop on the same day.

Justin Bieber – Sorry

After a widely-covered rebellious phase with the media (and life in general), Stratford-born Ontario native Justin Bieber is finally letting his music do the talking. Bieber dropped a music video for his latest single “Sorry” after teasing the song for a couple of weeks, filled with ladies working the dance floor. Directed and choreographed by Parris Geobel, the video features dancers of ReQuest Dance Crew and The Royal Family Dance Crew with Justin unfortunately not making an appearance at any point. Sorry ladies! The beachy, tropical and dancehall-inspired track further highlights 2015 to be the defining year of Bieber’s music career with singles “Where Are Ü Now” and “What Do You Mean” already peaking at #1 on various charts.

Bieber’s fourth studio album, Purpose, releases on Friday, November 13th, 2015…

One Direction – Perfect

Here’s yet another video that has sparked discussions amongst loads of people since its release on October 20th for several reasons. Directed by Sophie Muller, the black-and-white music video features British-Irish quartet Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan lounging around New York City’s Intercontinental Hotel and doing things they enjoy. We see Horan play golf and play acoustic guitar, Styles trying on some haute couture and belting the song, Payne mixing music on his laptop and getting a tattoo while Tomlinson kicks a ball around and causes mischief with Payne. Much debate has sprung regarding Perfect being sonically similar to Taylor Swift’s Style – Taylor being Harry Styles’ ex-girlfriend. The video also shares visuals with Swift’s Style – notably the clouds overlay in Swift’s and Styles’ solos.

One Direction’s fifth studio album, Made In The A.M, drops on November 13th, 2015 (you read that right!) – the same day as Justin Bieber’s Purpose. This has sparked the two fandoms – Beliebers and Directioners – against each other and led to mass debates on social media about the two albums releasing on the same day.

What do you think of these two songs? What do you make of the Taylor Swift comparisons? Who do you think will come out on top in the battle of the albums – The Biebs or 1D?
