From Bartending to Bond… James BOND

After months of speculation, the wait for details of the new James Bond theme song has finally come to an end. While the likes of Lana Del Rey, Ellie Goulding and Radiohead had been rumored to record the highly awaited Spectre theme song, releasing worldwide November 6th, singer-songwriter Sam Smith has emerged a suitable, yet unlikely, winner.

The track “Writing’s on the Wall” is set for a release date of September 25th, 2015. Smith’s involvement with the James Bond film comes as a surprise to many as just last week, Smith had repeatedly denied that he was involved with the project. Speaking to BBC Radio 2’s Jo Wiley, Smith said he was “definitely not” working on the project. He added, “That’s not me. That’s definitely not me.”

However, in an interesting turn of events a week later, BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw revealed the singer of the song to be none other than Mr. Smith. The London-born crooner exclaimed, “I’m so relieved to talk about this. It’s been a top secret mission of my own!” While previous interviews distanced him from the Bond movie, Smith revealed that the song was written and recorded in January and he has kept the secret from many people since. He adds, “I got called into an office with Sam Mendes (director) and Barbara Broccoli (producer) at Paramount Studios. They gave me a script with my name written all over it, I read the script… they said ‘have a go at the song’. It’s the quickest I’ve ever written a song. It took 20 minutes and they loved it.” The song itself was co-written with fellow Grammy Award winner and best friend Jimmy Napes, who worked with Smith on Top 10 hits La La La, Stay With Me and I’m Not The Only One. Additionally, British electronic music duo, Disclosure, who provided Sam Smith with his big break in 2012, tweeted that they had “added some additional production” to the song.

The film features Daniel Craig, Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, David Bautista, Ralph Fiennes and Andrew Scott.

“Writing’s on the Wall” becomes the first Bond theme song to be recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965. With this, Smith joins a long list of iconic Bond singers which includes the likes of Tom Jones, Louis Armstrong, Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, Tina Turner, Madonna, Alicia Keys and Adele. While Adele’s Bond song, Skyfall, won her an Oscar in 2013, Smith possesses all the ingredients to follow up his 2014 Grammy Awards sweep (winning 4) with an Oscar of his own in 2015. Upon announcing it on Instagram, Smith said, “This is one of the highlights of my career… I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

From being a London bartender five years ago to singing a James Bond theme song, Sam Smith shows no signs of stopping in making his dreams come true. As we await the release, the writing is on the wall for Smith; come February 28th 2016, Smith may well be adding an Oscar to his ever-growing collection of awards.

“Writing’s on the Wall” is available for pre-order on iTunes right now and releases worldwide September 25th, 2015.
